LP SmartSide vs. vinyl in a freeze–thaw climate.

Both will keep the weather out. They fail differently, they look different from the street, and they age differently through thirty Minnesota winters. Here’s how we think about the choice.

The short answer

How we think about the choice

Vinyl

The lowest install cost and no painting. It gets brittle in deep cold, and hail leaves it holed.

LP SmartSide

Takes impact and hail far better and holds paint. It costs more, and the installer matters more.

Either way

The house wrap, flashing and window details underneath are where most siding failures start.

Freeze–thaw

Water gets behind or into siding, freezes, expands, and pushes.

Do that sixty times a winter for decades.

Vinyl handles it by moving. Engineered wood handles it by being sealed. Both work when installed correctly. Both fail when they aren’t.

Vinyl: what you’re buying

Lowest install cost, no painting, and thousands of houses in the south metro wear it fine.

What you get

  • The lowest install cost
  • No painting
  • Thousands of houses in the south metro wear it fine

The trade-offs

  • It gets brittle in deep cold and can crack from an impact that wood would shrug off
  • Hail leaves it holed
  • Dark colors fade and can warp in direct sun
  • It reads as vinyl from the curb, which matters at resale in some neighborhoods

What you get

  • It takes impact and hail far better than vinyl
  • It holds paint
  • A long manufacturer warranty when installed to spec

The trade-offs

  • Higher material and labor cost
  • It depends on details: sealed cut ends, correct clearances at the ground and roof, proper flashing
  • So the installer matters more than with vinyl

How we’d choose

Rental or a house you’ll sell in a few years, budget matters most: vinyl, hung right. A house you’ll be in for a while, or one that gets hail every few years: SmartSide, because the second hailstorm pays for the difference.

Two questions

How long will you own the house?
Does it get hail every few years?

Either way, the house wrap, flashing, and window details underneath are the same job, and they’re where most siding failures actually start.

Questions we get about this

Does LP SmartSide need to be painted?

It comes pre-finished from the factory in a range of colors, or primed for field painting. Pre-finished is usually the better value; a repaint is typically 10–15 years out.

Can you replace only the damaged siding after hail?

Sometimes, if a match is available. Vinyl colors are discontinued often, and sun-faded siding won’t match new. That’s a conversation for the inspection, and it’s part of what the insurance scope covers.

Is fiber cement an option too?

Yes, and we install it. It’s the heaviest and most fire-resistant of the three, with its own install requirements. Ask at the walkthrough; it’s usually a close call with SmartSide.
